Using very common and easy to get ingredients, spring rolls and cha are two simple yet delicious dishes. Although they can be made outside of Viet Nam, the great thing about living in Ha Noi, is that you can just go to any outside market and you will be getting the freshest ingredients, harvested and grown just outside of the city. However, you do have to be conscious that not everything is healthy for the body and make sure that not a high amount of pesticides was used on the plants, which would then go onto harming the people who eat it. But with the right ingredients, spring rolls and cha are the best compliment for noodles and dipping sauce. For anyone wondering what cha is, well it is a combination of flattened meat balls and pieces of meat which have been marinated and cooked over charcoal to add flavour. The spring rolls are usually eaten during ceremonies as well, however, at home, I am only allowed to have cha on special occasions and for me that's what makes it so special. But if anyone ever comes to Ha Noi, I would just like to say that the rule which goes: "the dirtier the street place, the yummier the food" is not actually true and you should really check with someone before eating somewhere, or go to one of the places in my recommendations. Because sometimes, although the food is better, you never know if it is really bad for you or not.
Recommendation for a place to eat Bun Cha: 1 Hàng Mành, Hàng Gai, Hoàn Kiếm, Hà Nội, Việt Nam
Many people have told me about this place and so I decided to give it a visit, however the spring rolls are not just made from beef but instead crab meat. The taste will be different, maybe even more enjoyable but I think that there are so many variations of the traditional Vietnamese spring roll, that the best way to try them all is to make them yourself!
