Although this sounds quite weird and a little disgusting, a variety of soups, including the puff pork skin soup, are eaten during ceremonies and memorials which are usually 1 month, 6 months, 1 year… from the time when we lost a member of our family. Soup is an important part of meals, almost every lunch and dinner meal includes a bowl of soup. I think that as a child, soup has always been my savior, eating the soup with my rice would help me finish it faster so that I can go back to play. Not to mention the soup is almost always healthy, full of vegetables, very tasty and can be added nd eaten with rice too . This puff pork skin soup is cooked by my family for almost every big celebration, from New Years Eve to the days of worship and memorials. Usually, the female members of the family cook the whole meal and this means they get to choose what variety of soups, rice, meat… to serve to everyone. It's easy to eat and the puff pork skin, although the name sounds unappetizing and it looks like bubble wrap, is actually very delicious. The broth is light and there is a variety of vegetables to choose from as well. Much like sticky rice, each member of my family likes to enjoy a different soup. Some include: bamboo shoots (canh mang), potato and carrots (canh khoai), crab (canh cua)… Many of which are just eaten daily, others like bamboo shoots soup is usually only made during new year's eve or memorial ceremonies.
